SOFTBALL PREVIEW: West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. --- The Mississippi College softball team opens a three-game road series with the University of West Alabama today at 5:00 p.m. The teams will wrap up the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. at the UWA Softball Complex.

SERIES RECORD    
Mississippi College and West Alabama will renew a long-standing rivalry this weekend as they two schools have met 55 previous times with MC holding a 30-25 advantaged in the series. The Lady Choctaws won the first eight games, dating back to 1986. The school have not faced off since 2007 when UWA traveled to MC and the Lady Choctaws, a D-III program at the time, swept a doubleheader.

NOTES ON THE LADY CHOCTAWS    
Brooke O'Hair is in her 9th season as the head coach at Misisissippi College, earning her 200th career win last season. O'Hair opened her successful stint with 38-10 record and an American Southwest Conference East Division championship. The Lady Choctaws advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament that season and also qualified for the postseason tournament in 2010 and 2011.

The Lady Choctaws (13-9, 8-6 GSC) had been rolling with 10 wins in their last 13 games, but they traveled to Lee University and were swept by the Lady Flames in Cleveland. MC only scored five runs in the three-game series and hit .179 in the series.

Juniors Ashley Subervielle and Madison Oliver had good weekends, each hitting over .300 withi three combined doubles, four RBI and two runs scored. Suberville (.303) leads the team with eight dobules, while Oliver has six two-baggers and hit her first home run of the season last week.

Senior Brooke Smitherman (.411) is the team's leading hitter, and opponents continue to respect her power with 22 walks this season. For her career, she has drawn 137 base on balls and has posted a .578 on-base percentage. The Prattville native is MC's all-time leader in home runs (26), RBI (118) and slugging percentage (.730).

Seniors Shay Mickens and Macey Lee have combined for the majority of MC's stolen bases this season, going 24-of-25 on the basepaths, while the Lady Choctaws are 42-of-47 overall. The two rank 2nd and 3rd all-time in career swipes as Lee has 68 and Mickens has 57. They are still chasing Jennifer Jones (2008-11), who stolen 84 total bags.

Junior Carlie Sargent was MC's first signee since going back to Division II, and she has proven her worth throughout the season. The Oxford, Ala. native has been named the NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week twice and is 9-3 with a 2.04 ERA and a team-high 61 strikeouts. She struggled a bit last weekend, taking two losses at Lee.

Senior Lacie Patterson is 2-4 with a 3.30 ERA and has tossed two complete games, including a shutout this season. Seniors Elissa Kelly (0-1, 3.07 ERA) and Ashley Vann (1-0, 2.10 ERA) have been utilized more often in the circle as of late, while freshman Katherine Lee (1-1, 4.74 ERA) has also seen more time.

NOTES ON THE LADY TIGERS
The Lady Tigers (9-14, 3-11 GSC) are led by 8th-year head coach Will Atkinson and are coming off a tough series with #2 Valdosta State that saw them get outscored 38-1 over a three-game sweep. Overall, they are 2-9 in their last 11 games.

UWA ranks 9th in the Gulf South Conference with a .278 batting average, as a team. They do rank 3rd in the league with 151 runs scored and are 2nd with 23 home runs on the year.

Treasure Rodriguez (.357) is the team's leading hitter with eight doubles and five home runs. Lydia North (.348) is the offensive catalyst with a team-high 23 runs scored and 12 stolen bases. As a team, UWA is 24-of-25 on the basepaths. Scarlett Wright (.324) leads the team with 23 RBI, ranking 2nd on the team with 24 hits and four home runs.

The Lady Tigers rank last in the GSC with a team ERA of 6.90. They have walked a league-high 126 batters and have given up the 2nd-most runs in the league (167).

Alli Hall is 6-10 with a 5.84 ERA, leading the team with 42 strikeouts in 82.2 innings pitched. She has also walked 71 on the year. Ashley Stassin (2-1, 6.74 ERA) and Giana Cavallaro (1-3, 10.96 ERA) have also seen time in the circle.
