Choctaws Snap Skid with Doubleheader Sweep of Selma

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team broke out of a month-long slump with a doubleheader sweep of Selma University on Thursday afternoon at Frierson Field.

The Choctaws (9-14) opened the day with a 6-2 victory, and the bats came alive in the second game with an 11-0 win. In the process, they saw a 12-game losing streak come to an end that had their last win on February 19th against Union.

Freshman Kyle Smith was the star offensively, going 6-for-7 with three runs scored, an RBI and three stolen bases. The Petal native is now hitting .609 on the season with a .700 on-base percentage.

The MC bullpen also had an impressive day, tossing 7.0 innings of perfect baseball over the two games. In the opener, junior Wesley Wilkinson tallied two strikeouts in 3.0 innings, while senior Grady Turman struck out one in the final inning.

Senior Jayme Monroe earned his first start of the season after recovering from surgery following the 2014 campaign. The Clinton native scattered six hits over 3.0 innings.

In the second game, junior Kyle Cumlander picked up his second win of the season, allowing just one hits with six strikeouts over 4.0 innings. Freshman Jake Fraze and juniors Taylor Olsen and Tyler Scholl each pitched a perfect inning of relief to clinch the win.

The Choctaws got the scoring going in the first inning of the first game as senior Marty Strigfellow drove in a run on a hit-by-pitch and junior Hunter Hall drove in two runs with a single.

Juniors Colton Caver and Caleb Upton extended the lead to 5-0 after two innings with RBI of their own.

The Bulldogs would score a run on an RBI single by Cullen Boswell in the 3rd, but MC answered right back and junior Logan Ferrell drove in freshman Colton Johnson with a double to the right-center gap.

Selma would score another run in the 4th inning, but the Choctaws snapped the 12-game losing streak with the win.

In the second game, the Choctaws were leading 4-0 after four innings, but they broke the game open in the 5th with a 7-run frame. Sophomore Hunter Bolin's three-run double pushed the lead to 10-0, while Caver's RBI double scored Bolin for the final run.

The Choctaws will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Livingston, Ala. for a three-game series with West Alabama, beginning with a single game on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
