Second Half Surge Lifts Argonauts to 74-53 Win over Lady Choctaws

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team finished their road trip with a 74-53 loss to the University of West Florida on Saturday afternoon at the UWF Field House.

The Lady Choctaws (8-13, 4-13 GSC) trailed by as many as 11 in the first half, but a free throw by junior Deizarae McCoy with 14:40 remaining in the game cut the score to 40-37.

Back on December 18th, MC erased a 16-point defict and picked up a 56-55 win over the Argonauts (16-5, 13-4 GSC). On Saturday, UWF scored 11 straight points and never led by fewer than 12 the rest of the game.

Junior Ashley Minor scored a team-high 16 points for MC, while tallying four steals. The Natchez native had 10 steals in the last meeting between the teams.

Despite fouling out, junior Kristen Sampson poured in 12 points. McCoy had three points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Argos, who went 30-of-38 (79%) from the free throw line, were led by Brianna Williams and Jasmine Wigfall, who each scored 19 points. Toni Brewer had six points and a team-high eight rebounds.

The Lady Choctaws shot 40% (20-of-50) from the field, but only went to the line 16 times, coverting 11 opportunities. MC was called for 26 fouls, while UWF was whistled just 15 times.

The Lady Choctaws will return home next weekend as they host North Alabama on Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum.
