CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College baseball team opened the 2015 season with a sweep of Tougaloo College, outscoring the Bulldogs by a total of 51-9 over the three games.
The Choctaws (3-0) opened the day with a 15-1 victory over the Bulldogs (0-4). They capped the doubleheader with a 25-1 win the second game.
Senior
Akiko Thompson highlighted a seven-run first inning in game one, driving home two runs with a triple to right center, scoring junior
Tanner Densford and freshman
Colton Johnson.
After the Bulldogs put up a run in the second inning, junior
Taylor Olsen cruised to the victory on the mound, allowing just five hits with six strikeouts and one walk over 6.0 innings pitched. Senior
Andy Olmsted came in to get the final three outs of the game.
Sophomore
Hunter Bolin had a big day in the opener, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. On the weekend, Bolin was 6-for-9 with six runs scored, six RBI and four stolen bases.
As a team, MC hit .404 on the weekend with nine doubles, a triple and nine stolen bases.
In the second game, the Choctaws wasted no time putting up big numbers as they scored 10 runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by senior
Marty Stringfellow. The Lucedale native finished the weekend 4-for-9 with five runs scored.
The Bulldogs scored the opening run of the game in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Joshua Thomas, but MC would score the next 25 runs, unanswered.
Junior
Hunter Hall knocked his second three-run double of the weekend in the first inning, scoring Densford, Thompson and Bolin.
Freshman
Jake Fraze earned his first career start on the mound, going 4.0 innings and striking out four without a walk. The Plano, Texas native picked off three runners at first base in the game.
The Choctaws will get back on the diamond on Tuesday when they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to face LeMoyne-Owen for a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
