MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College baseball team kept rolling with a doubleheader sweep of LeMoyne-Owen College on Tuesday afternoon at Gagliano Field.
The Choctaws (5-0) opened the day with 21-1 victory over the Magicians (0-7), tallying their second straight 20-run game after a 25-1 win over Tougaloo on Saturday. In the second game, MC held LOC to just one hit in a 7-0 win.
"I thought our guys came out and played well on a chilly day," said head coach
Brian Owens. "We've had a good first five games, but Gulf South Conference play starts this weekend, and I'm excited to see how our guys respond. We've definitely got some momentum going forward."
LeMoyne-Owen opened the day with an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, but Choctaw pitchers would allow just five hits and no runs over the final 13 innings of the day.
Freshman
Jake Fraze earned his second win in as many starts, striking out five and walking just one over 5.0 innings. Senior
Andy Olmsted finished the contest with four strikeouts in two innings.
Junior
Colton Caver led the offensive attack with three hits and three runs scored, while six different Choctaws tallied multiple hits as MC put up 17 as a team. Junior
Garrett Odom drove in a team-high four runs in the win.
In the second game, junior
Kyle Cumlander made his first appearance of the season and struck out seven batters without allowing a hit over 4.0 innings. Senior
Grady Turman and juniors
Wesley Wilkinson and
Tyler Scholl combined to produce the first shutout of the season for MC.
The Choctaws stole nine bases and seven different players scored a run, while sophomore
Hunter Bolin drove in a team-high two runs in the game.
MC will be back in action this weekend as they open Gulf South Conference play when they travel to Memphis to play a three-game series with the Bucs on Saturday and Sunday.
