Men's Basketball Preview: West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team gets back on the road this weekend as they face the University of West Georgia in Carrollton on Sunday afternoon in The Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (ET).

This will be the 22nd all-time meeting between the two schools with MC holding a 15-6 edge in the series. The Choctaws are 7-4 all-time in Carrollton but have not won a game in the series since the 1992-93 season.

Last season, the Choctaws and the Wolves played a thriller in The Coliseum, with UWG grabbing an 86-85 victory. MC led 85-81 with under a minute to play, but a three-pointer and a couple of free throws by Deonta Stocks gave the Wolves the win.

Tory Rice scored a career-high 28 points, going 10-of-15 from the field and 8-of-12 from the free throw line. Tristan Moore dished out 14 assists, the second-most in school history behind Randy Clemens, who had 17 in 1973-74 vs. Troy State.

On Thursday night, the Choctaws opened GSC play with a 68-65 win at West Alabama. MC held off a late Tiger charge that saw the lead go from 14 to 2 in the final minute. Rice led MC with 16 points and nine rebounds in the game.

The Choctaws are led by head coach Don Lofton, who comes into his 12th season with his 200th career victory in sight. Lofton, who has been a part of the program for more than 30 years, has won 191 games as the head man.

Rice (18.3 ppg) is MC's leading scorer on the season, shooting 72% from the field. He is on pace to set a new Choctaw record for offensive rebounds after pulling down 98 last season. He is averaging 11 rebounds this season and has posted two double-doubles, giving him 15 in his career.

Moore (12.3 ppg) is also averaging in double-figures and leads the team with 13 assists. The Senatobia native posted the 9th-best total in school history with 104 last season. He is on pace to finish in the top-10 in school history in helpers.

Johnny Rucker (11.7 ppg) is scoring in double-figures, as well, and hit a couple of big free throws in the road win over the Tigers. The MS Delta CC transfer has scored in double-figures 16 times in his 23 games.

MC has made a three-pointer in 461 consecutive games, dating back to March 5, 1998 (0-7 vs. Sewanee). The Choctaws got hot from long range on Thursday night, going 7-of-16 from behind the arc.

The Wolves are led by head coach Michael Cooney in his 9th season at the helm. He has posted 126 wins, including a Gulf South Conference regular season championship in 2014-15. He has also led UWG to the NCAA Super Regional in 2011-12 and 2014-15.

UWG is averaging 99 points per game, scoring over 100 three times this season. They scored a season-high 119 points in a season-opening victory over Lane College. The Wolves also opened the year with an exhibition win over Division I Jacksonville State on November 9th (87-78).

Steph Branch (18.0 ppg) is the team's leading scorer and rebounder (6.7) on the season. He also leads the team with 19 assists and 13 steals, shooting 57% from the field.

Iakeem Alston (16.7 ppg), Shannon Fowler (14.8 ppg) and Keron Briggs (11.0 ppg) are also averaging in double-figures this season. The team is shooting 51% from the field and 43% from the three-point line on the season.
