VALDOSTA, Ga. –- The Mississippi College women's basketball team notched its first Gulf South Conference win of the season with a 68-63 decision at Valdosta State University. The victory moves MC to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the league.
Carla Clemmons led a trio of players in scoring with a career-high 22 points.
Chloe Roberts added 17 points with 15 coming from
Kristen Sampson, who paced the squad with eight rebounds.
The Lady Choctaws outscored VSU (6-5, 2-5 GSC) 27-15 in the final quarter en route to the five-point win.
MC trailed 57-56 with 3:39 left to play, but Roberts scored on a layup with 3:30 left to give the Navy and Gold a one-point advantage. Sampson added a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 60-57 and MC never looked back in the contest.
VSU led 48-43 after three quarters, but the Lady Choctaws went on a 10-5 run to knot the contest at 53-all. The scoring spurt was capped on a 3-pointer from
Shaniqua Love. After Maggie Davis knocked down two free throws to place the Lady Blazers back in front 55-43, Love dropped her second 3-pointer of the game to place the Lady Choctaws up 56-55.
Imari Simpson added a layup to put VSU back up 57-56 to setup the stretch run.
MC finished the night shooting 50 percent from the field, including a 30.8 clip from behind the arc. The Lady Choctaws shot a season-best 84.2 percent from the charity stripe.
Lydia Harvey led the Red and Black with 18 points while Davis added 14 along with a team-best six rebounds. VSU connected on 40.4 percent from the floor and 90.9 percent from the free throw line.
Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 2 as it hosts the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Tip is slated for 2 p.m.
