CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team dropped a 64-51 decision to the University of Alabama in Huntsville to open the 2016 portion of the slate. The setback moves MC to 3-7 on the season and 1-6 in Gulf South Conference play.
Kristen Sampson led the Lady Choctaws with 18 points while
Chloe Roberts added 13 points. It marks the ninth game in double figures for Sampson and the 27th of her career. Roberts has scored in double digits in all 10 contests in her debut season with the Navy and Gold.
Carla Clemmons and
Toni Woods tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven each. The duo combined for nearly half of the Lady Choctaws' 29 boards in the outing.
Despite tying a season-high shooting 50 percent from the 3-point line, MC finished the day connecting on 33.3 percent from the floor. The percentage from behind the arc equaled the mark against Belhaven in the season opener.
UAH (7-4, 4-3 GSC) snapped a two-game skid with the victory as the Chargers shot 46 percent from the field, including a 45.5 clip from behind the arc. Dina Saunders paced the Blue and White with 22 points while going 5-for-10 from the 3-point line. Josi Saunders added 12 points for UAH with seven of her points coming from the charity stripe.
Three consecutive 3-pointers to open the contest raced the Chargers out to a 9-2 lead, but a Roberts' triple with 5:21 left before the half pulled the deficit to 18-15. UAH answered with a 10-3 run to grab its first double figure lead of the day, 28-18, with 2:14 remaining in the first 20 minutes of action. The Chargers kept the pressure on grabbing its largest lead of the game, 51-28, with 2:58 left in the third quarter on a 3-pointer from Chandler Elder.
MC clipped the deficit to 12 points in the fourth quarter on a pair of occasions, but couldn't force lead under double figures.
Mississippi College returns to action on Monday, Jan. 4 as it hosts the University of North Alabama. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
