CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team dropped its fourth straight Gulf South Conference contest as the Lady Choctaws (2-5, 0-4 GSC) fell 63-59 to Christian Brothers University on Saturday evening. CBU improves to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
MC received career-high rebounding efforts from
Toni Woods,
Carla Clemmons and
Khadijah Jones en route to the team's season-high 47 boards in the contest. Clemmons pulled down 10 boards to go along with a team-leading 17 points – one off her career-best – for her first double-double of the season.
Woods grabbed a team-best 15 rebounds and was just three points shy of posting her first double-double of the season to join Clemmons. Jones pulled down seven to surpass her previous high of five on Thursday night.
"Carla and Toni are both new players and are very athletic. I think as the season goes, I think, you'll see improvement. We've been in the last few games, but have been outrebounded," said head coach
Paul Allen Duke. "Tonight, we saw improvements in rebounding and I think we'll get better as the season goes along. They really got on the boards like we know they can tonight. Khadijah gives us the size at 6'2 and I believe, she'll give us more help offensively. She gave us great effort tonight."
Chloe Roberts joined Clemmons in double figure scoring with 13 points.
"
Chloe Roberts continues to impress us with her play," Duke said. "We got some great minutes tonight from
Shuntavia Rodgers at the point guard position. She really helped us out on the defensive end tonight."
Rodgers, a redshirt freshman from Memphis, Tenn., scored her first career points in the contest against her hometown school with 54 seconds remaining before the half and giving the Lady Choctaws a 29-24 lead.
The Lady Choctaws shot 45.8 percent from the field in the first half before finishing the evening connecting on 33.3 percent. CBU was held to 29.6 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of play, but finished the contest connecting on 39.3 percent.
The Lady Bucs converted 25 MC miscues into 14 points and outscored the Lady Choctaws by four points in points off turnovers.
"We're close, but we have to get better as a team and correct some of these things, like turnovers, which was the difference in the ball game. We had some lack of execution offensively in the second half. We shot a lot better in the first half and rushed shots in the second half. We've got to go back to work."
Courtney Banks led Christian Brothers with 12 points. Rachel lee and Ashley Schaefer each added 11 points to join Banks in double figures.
Mississippi College returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 17, as the squad travels to the University of West Florida. Tip-off in Pensacola, Fla., is scheduled for 5 p.m.
