Lady Choctaws' Strong Effort Not Enough to Topple No. 9 Union

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team held nationally-ranked Union University below its season average shooting, but couldn't upset the No. 9 Bulldogs falling 74-59 at A.E. Wood Coliseum on Thursday evening.

UU, who remained unblemished at 9-0 and 3-0 in Gulf South Conference action, shot 40-percent from the floor, including a 39.1 clip from behind the arc. Union averages 47 percent from the field and 44 percent from the 3-point line.

A trio of Lady Choctaws (2-4, 0-3 GSC) posted double figures in the contest. Kristen Sampson led the squad with 16 points. The Jackson, Miss., native has scored in double-digits in every outing this season and 24 for her career.

Chloe Roberts added 13 points for the Navy and Gold, marking the Reagan, Tenn., product's sixth consecutive outing in double figures. Toni Woods rounded out the group with 11 points – tying her season-high.

Sampson and Carla Clemmons tied for tops on the team on the glass as they each grabbed eight rebounds.

The Lady Choctaws finished the night shooting 41.7 percent from the field and 37.5 from behind the arc in the contest.

"They're a really good ball club. They have a good mixture of inside and outside play," said head coach Paul Allen Duke. "They beat us tonight with second chance shots. We feel like we guarded them well through their initial offense, but they shot it and rebounded well. We've got to do better blocking out and getting rebounds."

The Bulldogs outscored MC 19-10 in second chance points combined with a plus-14 advantage on the boards.

Kelsey Riser paced Union with a double-double as the guard scored 16 points and pulled down 17 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards.

Mississippi College returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 12 as it hosts Christian Brothers University. Tip against the Lady Bucs is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
