PENSACOLA, Fla. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team dropped a straight sets match the No. 23 University of West Florida on Tuesday evening. The setback clinched a season series sweep for the Argos as they improved to 23-5 and 15-1 in Gulf South Conference action on the season. MC moved to 3-24 and 2-14 in conference play.
Kayana Mitchell and
Madison Frazier paced MC with six kills each.
Sydney Chandler and
Bailee Berringer distributed 10 assists each in the contest. The double-digit total for Chandler inches her closer to the top five in career assists at MC as the Silverhill, Ala., native is 13 away from tying Pollyann Scruggs for fifth in program history. Junior
Alex Hackett led the defensive effort with 10 digs in the midweek outing.
After falling 25-13 in the opening set, the Navy and Gold battled back in the second, fighting the nationally-ranked Argos to a 25-23 decision as the two squads headed into the intermission with UWF leading 2-0.
West Florida opened with a pair of large advantages in the second set, leading by as many as seven, at 17-10. The Lady Choctaws fought to pull within a point on three different occasions down the stretch, behind a kill from Frazier and two from Mitchell, with the last coming on Mitchell's final kill of the set at 24-23. Kuhlmeier cinched the set with a kill off the assist StCyr.
UWF swept the match with an impressive 25-5 decision in the final set as the Argos posted a .577-attacking clip.
Autumn Duyn and Katy Kuhlmeier each recorded 11 kills for the Blue and Green as Kathryn Torre added 10. Monique StCyr dished out 39 of West Florida's 43 assists. Tori Martella collected a team-best 24 digs.
Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, Nov. 6 as the squad travels to Florence, Ala., to face the University of North Alabama. Match time has been moved to 5 p.m.
