Lady Choctaws' Early Success Not Enough to Topple West Alabama

CLINTON, Miss. --- After winning the first set 28-26, the Mississippi College volleyball team dropped the remaining three sets to fall 3-1 to the University of West Alabama on Tuesday evening at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

Jamila Biglow posted a .476 attack percentage on the night en route to 11 kills, which tied for tops on the team with Jenna Campbell. Bailee Berringer picked up her fifth contest with 20-plus assists as she logged a team-best 20 on the night. Sydney Chandler added 18 in her pursuit of the all-time assists leader.

A trio of Lady Choctaws' recorded double-digit digs in the affair as Alex Hackett tallied 14 to lead the squad. Madison Kimes added 11 as Berringer supplied 10 digs in the contest.

Despite trailing by as much as 20-15 in the opening set, MC rallied back to tie the contest at 24-all, holding off four straight set-points. The two conference foes exchanged leads and ties over the next few points, but a pair of kills from Kimes and Arielle Laurent along with a Tiger attack error secured the victory for the Navy and Gold.

UWA answered back in the second set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. MC attempted its second come-from-behind, set win, but couldn't overcome the early deficit, pulling as close as 17-14. The Tigers claimed eight of the final 10 points to force a 1-all deadlock heading into the intermission, winning 25-16.

The Red and White used a plus-.300 attack percentage over the next two sets to secure the match victory. The MC offense was stifled in the two sets, posting a sub-.100 attacking clip along with 20 miscues.

Yanesha Johnson led UWA with 13 kills while Briana Sanidfer added 10 on the night. Callie Murphy distributed 22 assists with 15 coming from Sam Burgess. Kimberly Hernandez proved the catalyst on the defensive end with 20 digs while Jaime Lancellot recorded six blocks.

Mississippi College returns to action on Friday, Oct. 30 as it hosts the University of West Georgia. Match time is slated for 6 p.m.
