CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team hits the road this weekend for Gulf South Conference action. The Lady Choctaws travel to Union on Friday, Oct. 23 for a 7 p.m. contest. The road trip concludes with a 1 p.m. outing with Christian Brothers on Saturday, Oct. 24.
The two outings this weekend mark the first road trips of the second half of the conference slate. MC was nipped 3-2 against Union and fell 3-1 against CBU earlier this season at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
"We learned a lot about our team last weekend at the South Region Crossover and believe we might have turned a corner with this program," said head coach
Peter Cosmiano. "We tested ourselves against Florida Tech and were just a few plays away from possibly pulling that one out versus a solid team. We just need to continue the growth this weekend when we return to GSC play at Union and Christian Brothers."
A trio of Lady Choctaws have totaled 100-plus kills this season led by freshman
Jenna Campbell's 138. Sophomore
Kayana Mitchell has totaled 125 while freshman
Shelby Grace Mays is third on the team with 114 kills. Fellow freshman Baillee Berringer has provided a team-best 333 assists with sophomore
Sydney Chandler, who ranks seventh in career assists with 715, has tallied 255 on the campaign.
Defensively, Mitchell and junior college transfer
Jamila Biglow have paced the squad in blocks. Mitchell, who ranks eighth all-time in total blocks with 117, leads the team with 56 rejections this season. Biglow has tallied 43 in her first season with MC.
Five Lady Choctaws have reached the century mark in digs, sophomore
Madison Kimes is nearing in on 200-platuea this season with a team-best 192 digs. Mays sits second on the team with 183 digs while
Pearson Bell is third with 164 in her debut season. Chandler and Berringer joined the centennial dig club over the weekend 109 and 107 respectively.
Union (6-14, 5-6 GSC) snapped a three-game skid on Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Lee University. Ceciley Blanchard paces a quartet Bulldogs with 162 kills on the season while Hannah Huguley has registered 562 assists. Elise Seufert has totaled 247 digs with Casi Neff adding 59 blocks.
Christian Brothers (7-14, 3-8 GSC) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over Embry-Riddle in its final match of the South Region Crossover. Alexis Gillis leads the Bucs with 326 kills and 230 digs. Jessica Reber has dished out 736 assists while Mary Kathryn Miller has tallied 56 blocks.
Following the weekend slate, Mississippi College hosts the University of West Alabama on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Match time is slated for 6 p.m.
