CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will return this weekend to host Shorter University on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum.
This will be the first all-time meeting between the two schools as they are both new members to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference. MC is will be a full-fledged member of the league in 2016-17, while the Hawks are in their first year competing for GSC champoinships.
Head coach
Don Lofton is in his 11th season at the helm, winning his first two games of the season for his 180th career victory. Lofton has compiled a 107-30 (.781) record at home, including a perfect mark in the 2005-06 season.
The Choctaws won their fourth straight game on Monday night against North Alabama, wrapping up a solid road trip that saw them defeat Alabama Huntsville and UNA. For MC, it is their longest win streak since the 2009-10 season when they won five straight from January 12th-28th.
Senior
Jay Case had a career-night for the Choctaws in their win over the Lions, setting a new high with six made three-pointers in the victory. His 22 points was a new season-high and his second-best output after scoring 24 last season against Louisiana College. Case was 6-of-8 from behind the three-point line and added four assists.
Junior
Tristan Moore was a "stat sheet stuffer" on Monday night, tying a season-high with 16 points and setting a new season-high with eight rebounds. He also had six steals and four assists in the game. Junior
Tory Rice tallied his fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds in the game.
The MC defense proved again to be the key to victory against UNA as they are now 6-0 when they hold opponents below 50% shooting on the season and 0-4 when the opponents go over 50%. The Lions were just 25-of-64 (39%) from the field on Monday.
The Hawks have won five of their last six games, including going 3-1 on their recent four-game homestand. They played 11 of their first 14 games in Rome and have been on the road just three times this season. They will have to play nine road games in the last 14 of the season.
Shorter leads the GSC in field goal percentage (.514), but they allow their opponents to shoot 47%, which ranks 9th. Senior Dedric Ware is the team's leading scorer with 19.4 points per game, shooting 48% from the floor and 43% from the three-point line. Sophomore Jordan Jacks averages 16.6 points per game and a team-high 8.6 rebounds per contest.
