FLORENCE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will look to extend their longest winning streak of the season as they go for their fourth straight victory when they face the University of North Alabama on Monday night at 8:00 p.m. in Flowers Hall.
This will be the 44th all-time meeting between the two schools with UNA holding a 27-16 edge in the series, dating back to the 1972-73 season. The Choctaws are just 5-14 in Flowers Hall with their last victory coming in the 1994-95 GSC Tournament, a 76-56 victory over the Lions.
Head coach
Don Lofton is in his 11th season at the helm, winning his first two games of the season for his 180th career victory. Lofton has compiled a 107-30 (.781) record at home, including a perfect mark in the 2005-06 season.
The Choctaws have played their best basketball over the past three games, earning their first Gulf South Conference wins since the 1995-96 season. They gutted out a 71-67 victory over Alabama Huntsville on Saturday, outscoring the Chargers in the final three minutes, 13-3. Junior
Tory Rice led the team with 16 points, including knocking down two free throws in the final second to clinch the win.
MC's defense has been the key to their success, as of late, as they are 4-0 when teams are held under 50% shooting and score fewer than 70 points. The Choctaws are shooting 47% from the field themselves, led by Rice, who is shooting over 60% from the floor and is averaging a team-high 16.0 points per game.
Junior
Johnny Rucker, who nailed back-to-back three's in the final minutes against UAH to tie the game, is also averaging in double-figures with 13.2 points per game while shooting 46% from behind the arc. Junior
Tristan Moore leads the team with 4.8 assists per game, while senior
Rayner Fredrick is shooting 56% from the floor with a team-high 23 steals.
The Lions are led by head coach Bobby Champagne, who has compiled a 192-143 overall record in his 12 seasons at the helm. UNA opened 2015 with an exhibition game at Auburn on Saturday afternoon, falling 82-61 despite trailing by just two points at the half. In their last GSC game, the Lions went on the road and picked up a GSC victory over Shorter, 87-83.
Brandon Herman is the team's leading scorer with 15.0 points per game, also pacing the team with 42 assists and 17 steals. Nathan Spehr is scoring 13.6 points per game and is tied for the team-lead with 42 assists.
