CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team renewed their rivalry with Delta State University on Saturday afternoon, picking up a 74-69 victory in A.E. Wood Coliseum.
It was the first meeting between the two schools since the 1995-96 season, and the Lady Choctaws (8-7, 4-7 GSC) shot 81% (13-of-16) from the field in the second half to erase a 37-34 halftime deficit to the Lady Statesmen (8-7, 6-5 GSC). MC also went 8-of-13 (62%) from the three-point line, tying a season-high for makes from long distance.
After trailing by as many as 10 points in the first half, the Lady Choctaws took their first lead of the second half with 11:57 to go on a three-pointer by senior
Jaianah Matthew, who tied a season-high with 13 points in the game. Matthew went 5-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from the three-point line in the come-from-behind victory.
The Lady Choctaw would not trail the rest of the game as they pushed their lead out to as many as eight at 69-61 with 2:02 remaining. The Lady Statesmen cut the score the 72-69 with 22 seconds remaining, but junior
Ashley Minor knocked down two free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Minor joined Matthew as MC's team leader with 13 points, going 4-of-8 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line, while tallying five steals. Junior
Allie Hill was also in double-figures with 10 points, posting a team-high four assists.
Chelsey Rhodes led DSU with 19 points, while Seneca Walton had 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Carrollton, Ga. to face West Georgia at 5:00 p.m. (Central).
