Men's Basketball Preview: Lee

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team had a four-game winning streak snapped last time out, and they will look to bounce back when they host Lee University at 8:00 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum on Monday.

This will be the first all-time meeting between the two schools as they are both new members to NCAA Division II and the Gulf South Conference. The Choctaws are 3-3 in the "Golden Dome" this year, while the Flames are 1-2 in true road games this season.

Head coach Don Lofton is in his 11th season at the helm, winning his first two games of the season for his 180th career victory. Lofton has compiled a 107-31 (.775) record at home, including a perfect mark in the 2005-06 season.

The Choctaws erased an 11-point deficit but came up short in a 90-85 loss to Shorter University on Saturday afternoon, snapping their longest win streak since the 2009-10 season. MC took a 61-60 lead with 12:32 remaining, but the Hawks regained the advantage and led 88-82 with just 16 seconds remaining. Junior Johnny Rucker drained a three-pointer and SU missed a free throw on the other end setting up a game-tying opportunity for MC. The Choctaws turned the ball over and the comeback attempt was thwarted.

Senior Emmanuel Ezejiofo scored a season-high 18 points, while senior Rayner Fredrick and juniors Rucker and Tory Rice had 16 points apiece. Rice tallied his sixth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds, while Fredrick had nine rebounds and three assists, going 6-of-11 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.

The Choctaws have gone as their defense has gone this year, posting a 6-0 record when they hold opponents to less than 50% field goal shooting. When opponents shoot 50% or better, the Choctaws are 0-5. They are also 5-0 when they hold opponents to fewer than 70 points in a game.

Rice leads the team with 16.1 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, while Rucker is just behind with 12.3 ppg. Junior Tristan Moore leads the squad with 52 assists and is scoring 9.9 points per game.

The Flames are led by head coach Tommy Brown, who is in his 10th season at the helm. Lee opened the year with five straight wins, but they have dropped their last three. In their last contest, they saw a lead in the final minutes disappear as Delta State came back for a 64-61 win.

Cory Billingsley leads the offense with 16.7 points per game and is shooting 54% from the field, including 42% from the three-point line. The Flames are good at getting to the free throw line and converting, shooting 74% on 323 attempts. Tyquan Roberts averages 11.5 points per game while leading the team with 5.0 rebounds per contest.
