CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team came back from a 16-point first half deficit to pick up a 56-55 victory over the Unviersity of West Florida on Thursday afternoon at A.E. Wood Coliseum.
The Lady Choctaws (6-3, 2-3 GSC) jumped out to an early 4-2 lead, but the Argonauts (7-2, 4-1 GSC) would take control of the first period and lead 33-17 with 39 seconds remaining. MC would score the final four points of the first half and go on a 10-0 run overall to cut the advantage to 33-27 with 18:11 remaining in the game.
West Florida, who took their first GSC loss of the season, pushed the lead out to 48-36 with under 10 minutes remaining, but MC would slowly chip away at the lead, tying the score at 54-54 when junior
Kourtney Steele made 1-of-2 free throws with 48 seconds left.
After UWF grabbed the lead back, MC pushed the ball ahead and junior
Ashley Minor gave MC their first lead since the opening minutes with a layup on an assist by junior
Kristen Sampson. Minor finished the game with her first double-double of the season, scoring 20 points with 10 steals.
After three combined timeouts by the two teams, the Argo had the ball with :02.9 remaining and Jasmine Wigfall drove to the basket, putting up a shot that rolled around the rim and out for MC to clinch the victory.
The Lady Choctaws scored 20 points off 23 West Florida turnovers and had 15 steals, including 12 takeaways in the second half. Senior
AnnMarie Harris also scored in double-figures with 10 points, while
Kourtney Steele had a team-high seven rebounds.
The Argos were led by Katie Bobs and Toni Brewer, who each score 16 points. Both players also had double-doubles as Bobos had 18 rebounds and Brewer had 12 boards. UWF outreboundned the Lady Choctaws 60-35, but the MC defense held them to just 29% (18-of-62) shooting from the floor.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action on Saturday when they play their last game of 2014 at 2:00 p.m. against Valdosta State.
