Men's Basketball Looks for First GSC Win Thursday Against West Florida

CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's basketball team will return home for the final two games of 2014, opening on Thursday afternoon against the University of West Florida at 3:00 p.m. in A.E. Wood Coliseum.

This will be the fifth all-time meeting between the two teams, playing twice in the 1968-69 season and twice in the 1994-95 season. UWF won the first three games before MC picked up a 75-73 victory at home in 1994-95. The Choctaws and Argonauts played an exhibition game to open the 2012-13 season with UWF taking a 78-75 victory in Pensacola. LaQuavius Cotton led MC with 24 points, while Brandon Blake had 20.

Head coach Don Lofton is in his 11th season at the helm, winning his first two games of the season for his 180th career victory. Lofton has compiled a 104-30 (.776) record at home, including a perfect mark in the 2005-06 season.

The Choctaws are coming off a 77-70 loss to Christian Brothers on Saturday afternoon, a game that saw the Choctaws with a lead in the second half. MC had their best shooting performance of the season with a 54.2% mark and going 15-of-18 from the free throw line. CBU also shot 50% from the field and took advantage of 22 MC turnovers to pick up the victory.

Junior Tory Rice leads MC with 15.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, posting three double-doubles in four games. He is shooting 59% from the field and is 28-of-40 (70%) from the free throw line. Junior Johnny Rucker is averaging 14.3 points per game and has scored in double-figures in 5-of-6 games and each of the last four.

Junior Tristan Moore is averaging 9.3 points per game with a team-high 29 assists. He has had at least four assists in each of the last three games while shooting 37% from the three-point line. Freshman Stacey Mack had season-highs in points (15) and rebounds (8) against Christian Brothers and is shooting 53% from the field in his rookie season.

The Argos are led by head coach Bob Stinnett in his sixth year with the program. UWF opened the season with four straight wins, but they have lost five of the last six games, including homes games against Shorter and Lee. The lone win over that span came at North Alabama in overtime (79-77).

Terrence Townes leads the team with 17.0 points per game, while Lendward Griffin (13.0 ppg), Erin Straughn (12.1 ppg) and Demetrius Moore (12.1 ppg) are also averaging in double-figures. Moore leads the team with 9.6 rebounds per game.
