CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men's soccer team closed out their first season of Gulf South Conference play with a 1-0 victory over West Florida on Sunday afternoon at Longabaugh Field.
With the victory, the Choctaws (10-5, 5-4 GSC) have now recorded double-digit wins in nine consecutive seasons. They also clinch an above .500 conference record for their first year in Division II and the GSC.
MC got on the board in the 29th minute when freshman
Elliot Rimmer sent a beautiful ball across the face of goal and senior
Francisco DeAnda headed it into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the year. It was the second time this season MC has won a match by the 1-0 score after
Stephen Roberson's "golden goal" in double overtime propelled them to the score over Christian Brothers on September 22nd.
Freshman goalkeeper
Humberto Pelaez recorded his third straight shutout, making four saves in the victory. He has now made 12 straight saves without allowing a goal.
The Argonauts (5-8-2, 3-4-1 GSC), who were the preseason favorites to win the conference, had chances as the clock ticked down, the best coming when Ethan Judice hit the crossbar with under nine minutes left.
MC has already qualified for the National Christian College Athletic Association MidEast Regional and will likely host the tournament after three straight wins.
The Choctaws have one more regular season game next Saturday when they host Talladega College at 3:00 p.m. at Longabaugh Field. Prior to the game, six seniors will be recognized:
Fredy Banuelos,
Anthony Chambers,
Francisco DeAnda,
Pedro Hernandez,
Stephen Roberson and
Brian Vasquez.
