MONTICELLO, Ark. --- The Mississippi College volleyball team opened the UAM Tri-Match on Tuesday with a four-set loss to Henderson State and closed the day with a three-set loss to Arkansas-Monticello.
The Lady Choctaws (5-18) dropped the first two sets to the Reddies (4-21) before taking the third set by a score of 25-21. In the fourth set, MC had a 24-21 advantage and appeared as if they were going to a fifth set, but HSU scored six of the next seven points to clinch the victory. Against the Boll Wevils (11-11), MC trailed 24-16 in the first set before scoring six straight points to close the gap. UAM would pick up the 25-22 win and go on to win the second and third sets by a score of 25-15.
Freshman
Sydney Chandler led MC against HSU with 42 assists, marking the most in a single match for a Lady Choctaw since
Pollyann Scruggs had 44 against Howard Payne in 2013. Freshman
Krista Zieschang tallied a season-high 15 kills, while freshman
Kayana Mitchell had 12 kills and a .611 hitting percentage. Mitchell also had seven block assists, while freshman
Ashton King had 10 kills and four block assists.
Jessica Moss and Nayeli Colunga led the Reddies with 14 kills apiece, while Violet Williams had 12. Ryleigh Thompson tallied 41 assists for HSU.
In the match against UAM, King and Zieschang led MC with nine kills apiece, while senior
Holly Tupper had a team-high 11 digs. Chandler had 21 more assists against the Boll Wevils, giving her 63 over the two matches.
Tasha Evans led Monticello with 11 kills, while Kaila Kikuwaga had 18 assists and Brittney Beckham had 11.
The Lady Choctaws will be back in action this weekend when they travel to face Lee (Tenn.) on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Shorter on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
