Entering his second season as an assistant coach for the Mississippi Christian University men's basketball program, John Works continues to play an integral role in the development of the Choctaws under head coach Josh Brooks. Works reunited with Brooks in 2025 after the pair spent three successful seasons together at Belhaven University, bringing continuity and a shared vision to the program.
During his first season in Clinton, Works helped the Choctaws navigate their inaugural year under a new coaching staff while contributing in all facets of the program. His responsibilities included recruiting, scouting, player development, video analysis, practice planning, and game preparation as Mississippi Christian University earned 10 victories, including key Gulf South Conference wins over Auburn Montgomery, Lee, Delta State, Christian Brothers, and Valdosta State. Works also played an important role in the development of freshman guard Phil Nelson, who emerged as one of the Gulf South Conference's top newcomers after averaging 15.8 points per game.
A Belhaven alumnus, Works returned to his alma mater in 2022 to join Brooks' staff, where he helped the Blazers become one of the top programs in the Collegiate Conference of the South. During his three seasons on staff, Belhaven reached back-to-back CCS Championship Games while posting consecutive 20-win campaigns, including a 21-5 record in 2024-25—the program's winningest season since 2013-14.
Prior to Belhaven, Works served as a graduate assistant coach at NCAA Division II Delta State University for two seasons. While with the Statesmen, he gained valuable experience in player development, scouting, recruiting, and daily basketball operations while earning a Master of Science degree in Human and Sports Performance.
As a student-athlete, Works competed at Belhaven from 2015-19, appearing in 54 games with 14 starts during his collegiate career. He began his college career with a redshirt season at Freed-Hardeman University before transferring to Belhaven. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management from Belhaven in 2019.
A native of Corinth, Mississippi, Works has built a reputation as a tireless recruiter and mentor with strong ties throughout the state's basketball community. He and his wife, Parrish, have one child and reside in Flowood, Mississippi.
