CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi Christian defeated Christian Brothers 3-0 on Tuesday. The Choctaws finished with a 43-23 advantage in kills and held Christian Brothers to a .025 hitting percentage.
MC turned a 12-10 first-set edge into a 22-10 cushion with a 10-0 run, including nine straight service points with
Cydney Mitchell at the line. Earlier, Christian Brothers moved ahead 6-4, but the Blue and Gold answered with a block by
Caroline Downey and
Holland Williams, a
Meg Paparella kill and a Williams kill to move in front 7-6.
Reese Regner helped drive the early offense with assists on kills by Paparella, Mitchell, Williams and
Mary Grace Foster, and Foster added the sideout kill that made it 13-10 before Mitchell's serving stretch. During the surge, the Choctaws got kills from Foster, Williams and Downey, a block from Foster and Williams, a service ace and several Christian Brothers attack errors, then later closed the set on a Williams kill from
Mamie Fromdahl for a 25-15 win.
The Blue and Gold created separation in the second set by stretching a 12-10 lead to 19-10, scoring seven straight points with six coming on
Reese Regner's serve. Earlier, MC opened with kills from
Cydney Mitchell, Foster and
Meg Paparella, and after Christian Brothers pulled even at 9-9, the home side answered with three points that included a
Cydney Mitchell block and kill for a 12-9 lead. The middle run featured pressure from Regner's serve, with Foster and
Cydney Mitchell each involved in a block, Regner adding an ace and Foster putting away a kill before Christian Brothers stopped it at 19-11. Christian Brothers cut into the margin late, but the Choctaws answered with kills from Downey,
Holland Williams and
Anna Grace Chason, and Williams closed the 25-20 set with a kill from Fromdahl.
MC won the third set 25-22 by taking the final three points after Christian Brothers tied the score at 22-22. Earlier, the Choctaws opened with three straight points, including
Reese Regner's service ace, and built an 8-3 lead with kills from Foster,
Cydney Mitchell and Downey. After Christian Brothers moved within 8-6, the Blue and Gold answered with kills by Downey, Fromdahl and
Holland Williams, followed by Downey's service ace, to push the score to 12-6.
Cydney Mitchell's block and
Meg Paparella's kill later helped MC reach 18-11, but Christian Brothers responded with five straight points and eventually pulled even at 22-22. The Choctaws got the next point on a service error, reached set point on a Christian Brothers attack error and finished the set on Paparella's kill from Mitchell.
Foster finished with 11 kills while hitting .308 and added two blocks.
Holland Williams also recorded 11 kills, hit .304 and contributed two block assists.
Reese Regner posted 18 assists, 13 digs and two service aces.
Cydney Mitchell added six kills, three solo blocks, six digs and one ace.
