Choctaws Fall in Walk-Off, Game Two Ends in Tie at No. 20 Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. — Mississippi College dropped a 7-6 decision in walk-off fashion in Saturday's opener at No. 20 Saint Leo before the second game ended in a 2-2 tie due to a pre-arranged travel time limit at Mary Cannon Cabot Stadium.

The Choctaws are now 5-6-1 overall.

In the first game, Mississippi College carried a late lead into the bottom of the seventh inning before Saint Leo rallied with four runs to secure the win.

MC broke through with four runs in the sixth inning after five scoreless frames. Shelby Samples sparked the rally with a home run. Madelyn England followed with a double, Mary Lem added a pinch-hit single and Blakely Gill delivered an RBI single. Camryn Bailey contributed a bunt RBI single, and Kate Rills lifted a sacrifice fly to give the Choctaws a 4-0 lead.

Saint Leo responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, then answered MC's two-run seventh with four runs in the bottom half for the 7-6 final.

In the second game, Mississippi College struck early.

England singled to right field in the first inning, driving in a run while Ellie Fryar scored on the play. Lem followed with an RBI single to give the Choctaws a 2-0 advantage.

Saint Leo tied the game in the third inning on an RBI walk and a groundout.

Reagan Rios turned in a solid performance in the circle, pitching six innings and allowing two runs — one earned — on five hits while walking two and striking out one.

Mississippi College appeared to take control in the seventh inning, scoring three runs in the top half to move ahead 5-2. However, the contest was halted at the pre-determined 2:15 p.m. EST time limit. Because the home team did not bat in the bottom of the inning, NCAA Division II rules required the score to revert to the last completed inning.

With the game tied 2-2 after six innings, the contest was declared a tie.

Over the past two weekends, the Choctaws have competed against one of the toughest early-season schedules in the region, facing No. 1 UT Tyler, No. 2 Tampa, No. 13 Angelo State and No. 20 Saint Leo.

Mississippi College will now return home before opening Gulf South Conference play Feb. 20-21 against Montevallo at the MC Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT on Friday, followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. CT.
