Fryar Hits for the Cycle as Choctaws Split in Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Mississippi College junior Ellie Fryar delivered one of the rarest offensive feats in softball Friday, hitting for the cycle to propel the Choctaws to a 12-5 victory over Southern Wesleyan before the team fell 3-2 to No. 2 Tampa later in the day.

Fryar powered Mississippi College's 14-hit performance in the opener, finishing with four hits — a triple, home run, single and double — while driving in four runs and scoring four times. The cycle marked a standout moment in the early portion of the season for the junior.

Mississippi College (5-5) jumped out early against Southern Wesleyan. Fryar tripled to open the game and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Lavergne. In the second inning, Fryar launched a two-run home run to center field to extend the lead to 3-0.

After Southern Wesleyan answered with five runs in the third inning, the Choctaws responded. Fryar delivered an RBI single in the fourth, and Lavergne followed with an RBI double to tie the game at 5-5. Mississippi College broke the game open with a seven-run fifth inning, highlighted by Mary Lem's three-run home run and Fryar's run-scoring double.

AK Willingham earned the win in relief, tossing 4 1/3 scoreless innings and allowing three hits with three strikeouts. Grace Wallis started and worked 2 2/3 innings.

In the nightcap, the Choctaws pushed No. 2 Tampa to the final at-bat before falling 3-2.

Fryar doubled in the first inning and later scored on an error to give Mississippi College a 1-0 lead. Tampa tied the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

Bella Myers gave the Choctaws a 2-1 advantage in the top of the seventh with a solo home run to left center. Tampa responded in the bottom half with a two-run single to secure the win.

Camryn Bailey delivered a strong complete-game effort in the circle, pitching 6 2/3 innings while allowing three earned runs on eight hits. She struck out nine and walked one.

Mississippi College returns to action Saturday morning in Saint Leo, Fla., facing No. 20 Saint Leo at 8 a.m. CST, followed by game two of the doubleheader.
