Choctaws Secure Series Against Montevallo

CLINTON, Miss. --- MC baseball notched its second series win of the season and its first in the Gulf South Conference as it topped Montevallo in a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 20 at Frierson Field. The Choctaws (6-8, 2-3 GSC) secured a decisive 13-3 victory in the first game of a doubleheader and rallied to pick up a 5-4, walk-off victory in the night cap.
 
In the opener, the Blue and Gold scored early and often, plating a run in all seven innings, including a back-to-back, three-run frames in the fourth and fifth. Alex Johnson and Cade Gadman logged three-hit performances while JT Thigpen, Tyrus Williams and Ty Murphy each added two-hit efforts. Johnson, Creek Robertson, Tyler Sanderson and Thigpen combined to drive 10 of the 11 runs.
 
Caleb Peterson (1-2) tossed a complete game earning his first victory of the season. The right-hander struck out four paired with eight hits and one walk in the effort.
 
MC totaled a season-high 15 hits in the lidlifter, including four going for extra bases. Sanderson and Johnson each had solo home runs in the contest while Robertson garnered the program's first triple of the season and Williams added a double.
 
In the second game, the Falcons jumped out a 4-1 lead, but MC scored four unanswered runs over the next six frames to grab its first conference-series victory since April 26, 2025 against Delta State. The final run came in the bottom of the seventh as Murphy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate Thigpen for the win.
 
Dylan Cope (2-0) recorded his second victory of the season, tossing two-plus innings in relief. He struck out a pair as the Falcons had only one reach base during his effort on the bump. Cooper Cooksey tossed 4.1 frames in the start, striking out four with four runs – three earned – on eight hits with a trio of walks.
 
Nick Slonaker cut the Purple and Gold's lead in half with a sacrifice fly in the second. Will Langston followed with the Choctaws' third home run of the day in the third, narrowing the margin to a run and Williams tied the contest two innings prior with ab RBI-triple that scored Johnson and set up the dramatic ending.
 
The two squads conclude the series on Saturday, Feb. 21. First pitch is Noon.
