CLINTON, Miss. --- Mississippi College secured a decisive 3-0 victory over UAH on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at A.E. Wood Coliseum. The Choctaws claimed the sets with scores of 25-21, 25-22, and 25-19. MC improves to 4-7 on the season and 1-0 in Gulf South Conference play. UAH moves 8-2 on the season.
The sweep is the first for the program over the Chargers since 1994 and just the sixth victory all-time in the series.
Felicity Pratt led the team with 13 kills, adding nine digs and three service aces to her performance.
Mary Grace Foster contributed with 10 kills and 13 assists, hitting at .429.
Rhaia Davey was strong at the net, recording 11 kills and five total blocks.
Samarin Kipple excelled on the back line, collecting 18 digs and delivering one service ace.
The first set began with MC gaining an early lead through a combination of opponent errors and key kills, notably by Foster and Davey. Despite a series of service errors on both sides, the Choctaws maintained momentum with a service ace from Pratt.
Midway through the set, the Blue and Gold trailed 14-8 but mounted a comeback with a series of successful plays, including a block and kill by Davey, leveling the score at 14-all. MC continued to apply pressure, and with a decisive service ace by Pratt, that regained the lead.
As the set neared its conclusion, MC capitalized on the Chargers' errors, with
Meg Paparella contributing a crucial kill. The set ended with The Blue and Gold taking advantage of a service error by UAH, sealing the first set 25-21.
The second set began with the Choctaws making a strong impact, as Kipple opened with a service ace to set the tone. The home team capitalized on the Chargers' errors, extending their lead with contributions from Davey and Foster, building a 5-2 advantage.
MC maintained momentum as they thwarted the Blue and White's attempts to draw even, thanks to a solid block from Davey and Paparella. Despite some resistance from the Chargers, including key plays from Zoe Smith, the Blue and Gold successfully built a lead with critical kills from Pratt and Paparella, pushing the score to 19-15.
In the closing moments, UAH closed the gap to 23-22, but
Cydney Mitchell and Davey delivered crucial kills to secure the set. MC clinched the set 25-22, maintaining their lead in the match.
The third set began with The Blue and White gaining an early advantage at 4-2, but MC quickly responded with effective offensive plays. Foster's kill from
Reese Regner set the tone, followed by a significant series of points from Pratt and Davey, leveling the score multiple times.
The Choctaws surged ahead with a decisive run, capitalizing on a service ace from Paparella to move into the lead at 12-8. The team extended their advantage with contributions from Foster and Pratt, pushing the score to 19-15. Despite the Chargers' efforts to close the gap, MC maintained their momentum.
A final push from the Blue and Gold featured key kills from
Ellie Foco and Davey, culminating in a 25-19 victory to close the set. MC's consistent scoring, paired with strong defensive stops, secured the set in their favor.
