OXFORD, Ala. – Mississippi College fell 2-1 to West Florida in a pitchers' duel Thursday afternoon at Choccolocco Park, sending the Choctaws to the elimination bracket in the Gulf South Conference Softball Tournament.
MC (35-16) managed five hits but couldn't overcome a two-run first inning by the Argonauts (36-15). West Florida's Erin Moon delivered a two-run double in the opening frame, providing all the offense UWF would need.
Blakely Gill led the Choctaws at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the third inning that scored Madelyn England, who had reached on a hit-by-pitch.
Camryn Bailey (14-7) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in the first inning. Madison Jenkins entered in relief, throwing five scoreless innings to keep MC in the game.
West Florida's Madison Jenkins (23-7) earned the win with five strong innings, while Gaddy Utsey picked up the save with two shutout frames.
The Choctaws return to action Friday at 10 a.m. in an elimination game against Trevecca Nazarene.
