CLINTON, Miss. — The Mississippi College softball team used explosive offensive innings and strong pitching performances to sweep Tueday's doubleheader against Spring Hill College at the MC Softball Complex.
In Game 1, the Choctaws exploded for eight runs in the second inning and never looked back in a 9-1 run-rule victory. A.K. Willingham (1-1) earned the complete-game win, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out one. Mississippi College (29-11) pounded out 10 hits, highlighted by Gaddy Utsey's two-run double and multi-hit efforts from Blakely Gill and Megan Matheis. Gill finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while Matheis added two hits and an RBI of her own.
In the second game, the story was all about Brookelyn Cannon's dominance at the plate and in the circle. The senior launched two home runs, including a grand slam in the first inning, and totaled five RBIs in a 10-2 win. She also went the distance in the circle, giving up just three hits and two earned runs over six innings to improve to 4-4 on the year.
The Choctaws racked up 12 hits in the second contest, with Shelby Samples, Matheis, and Gill again contributing key hits. Bella Myers added a two-run single in the sixth to cap the scoring.
Mississippi College returns to Gulf South Conference action this weekend as they travel to Huntsville, Ala., for a three-game series against UAH. The Choctaws and Chargers will play a doubleheader on Friday, April 11, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. CT, followed by a single game on Saturday, April 12, at 12 p.m. CT.
