HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Mississippi College split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with Alabama Huntsville on Friday afternoon at Charger Park, bouncing back from a run-rule loss in Game 1 with a commanding 8-0 victory in Game 2. The win gave head coach Leigh Streetman her 30th win of the season, marking a historic milestone in her debut campaign with the Choctaws.
With the split, MC moves to 30-12 overall and 18-8 in GSC play, while UAH sits at 23-18, 15-10 GSC. Streetman becomes just the second coach in program history to reach 30 wins in their first season and the first to accomplish the feat in the programs NCAA Division II history.
UAH used a nine-run fourth inning to take control and shut out Mississippi College in five innings, limiting the Choctaws to just one hit. Jill Cockrell's three-run home run jumpstarted the rally, and the Chargers piled on with six more runs—including a two-RBI single by Maddie Cartron and a two-run triple by Sadie Thompson.
Katie Bracken (11-7) earned the complete-game victory for UAH, striking out six and allowing just one baserunner via a hit-by-pitch and one hit from Shelby Samples. Madison Jenkins (11-3) took the loss for MC, surrendering five runs (four earned) in 3.1 innings.
Mississippi College responded in dominant fashion in Game 2, launching four home runs—including two by Madelyn England, who drove in a career-high six RBIs.
England blasted a grand slam in the second inning to give MC an early 4-0 lead, then followed with a two-run homer in the fifth. Samples and Megan Matheis added back-to-back solo shots later in the inning to put the game out of reach.
Camryn Bailey (13-4) tossed a complete-game shutout for the Choctaws, scattering three hits and striking out six without allowing a walk.
Bracken (11-8), who started both ends of the doubleheader for UAH, took the loss after allowing four runs in just 1.2 innings.
The Game 2 win marked Mississippi College's 30th victory of the season—making Streetman just the second coach in the program's 39-year history to achieve 30 wins in their debut season. The only other coach to do so was Brooke O'Hair, who reached 30 wins in 2007 during the NCAA Division III era. Streetman is now the first to accomplish the feat in the Division II era, adding to the significance of the milestone.
It also marks three consecutive 30-win seasons for the Choctaws and just the 11th in school history—one of the most consistent stretches in program history.
The Choctaws and Chargers are set to wrap up the three-game GSC series on Saturday at 12 p.m. in Huntsville.
