CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College clinched a berth in the Gulf South Conference Tournament with a 6-3 win over Christian Brothers on Saturday at the MC Softball Complex.
The game was scoreless through the first four innings, but Christian Brothers broke through in the top of the third. RJÂ Simpson singled to right field, bringing in Garrison for the first run of the game. Mississippi College responded in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs to take a 4-3 lead. Morgan Lavergne drove in two runs with a single, and a two-run error by Christian Brothers' defense allowed the Lady Choctaws to pull ahead.
The Choctaws added two more runs in the sixth after a passed ball and another error, bringing their total to six. Christian Brothers couldn't rally in the final innings, ending the game with a 6-3 loss.
Camryn Bailey (12-4) earned the win, throwing a complete game. She allowed three runs on five hits and struck out five. Christian Brothers' Alberson (0-4) took the loss after giving up four earned runs in 4.1 innings.
Blakely Gill and Madelyn England each had two hits for Mississippi College, while Lavergne drove in three RBIs. Shelby Samples also contributed with an RBI and a walk.
Despite five hits, Christian Brothers struggled to capitalize offensively. They also committed three errors, which contributed to their downfall.
With the victory, Mississippi College improves to 27-11 overall and 17-7 in GSC play, tying them for first place in the conference standings. The Lady Choctaws will return to action on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Spring Hill, beginning at 2 p.m. at home.
The win also secures Mississippi College's spot in the upcoming GSC Tournament, where they remain in the mix for a high seed as the season winds down.
