OXFORD, Ala. — Behind a stellar performance from Madison Jenkins in the circle and a big day at the plate from Madelyn England, Mississippi College defeated West Alabama, 4-2, on Wednesday morning in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament at Choccolocco Park.
Jenkins (14-4) tossed a complete game, allowing just two hits and no earned runs while striking out eight in 112 pitches. The Choctaws (35-15) overcame three errors and used timely hitting to move into the winner's bracket.
After West Alabama (30-17) took an early 1-0 lead on a pair of throwing errors in the top of the first, England quickly responded for MC, launching a solo home run to left field to even the score.
In the fifth inning, England delivered again, driving in two runs with a double to left center that gave MC a 3-1 lead. Ashley Lightcap added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI single to score Kallee Nichols.
England finished 2-for-2 with a home run, double and three RBIs.
West Alabama managed a sacrifice fly in the seventh, but Jenkins shut the door to secure the victory. Madison Wright (16-9) took the loss for UWA, surrendering four earned runs on six hits across six innings.
Mississippi College advances to play West Florida in the winner's bracket at 3:30 p.m. CT on Thursday.
