Choctaws Split on the Road at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Mississippi College softball team picked up a big conference win Friday afternoon, earning a split with West Florida in a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at the UWF Softball Complex.

After falling 10-2 in Game 1, the Choctaws bounced back with an impressive 9-1 win in Game 2 behind a dominant performance from Madison Jenkins in the circle and a trio of standout efforts at the plate.

The Argonauts (28-14, 19-10 GSC) used a six-run second inning to take control early, capitalizing on a pair of MC errors and launching a three-run home run to pull away. The Choctaws (31-14, 19-10 GSC) managed to plate single runs in the second and fourth innings on an RBI single from Camryn Bailey and a bases-loaded walk by Brookelyn Cannon, but couldn't close the gap.

Camryn Bailey (13-6) took the loss, while UWF's Hannah Guffey (18-7) tossed five innings and allowed just four hits.

Madison Jenkins (12-3) turned in one of her best outings of the season in the second game, going the distance with a four-hitter and allowing just one run while striking out three.

Offensively, MC struck early and often — erupting for five runs in the second inning and never looking back. Shelby Samples went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Madelyn England added three hits of her own, including a solo home run in the sixth.

The Choctaws capitalized on five UWF errors and got contributions throughout the lineup, with eight players recording at least one hit. England drove in three, and Megan Matheis added a sacrifice fly in the fourth. MC tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to seal the victory.

Mississippi College and West Florida are scheduled to close out the series on Saturday with a single game at noon in Pensacola. The two teams are now tied in the GSC standings at 19-10 with just one weekend remaining in the regular season.
