Choctaws Fall in 11-Inning Battle at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. --- Mississippi College mounted a dramatic late-game comeback but ultimately fell 3-2 in 11 innings to West Florida in a tense Gulf South Conference showdown on Friday, April 18 at Jim Spooner Field.

The setback is the first extra-inning contest of the season for the Blue and Gold (26-18, 17-11 GSC)

In what started as a pitcher's duel through the first four innings, the Choctaws found themselves trailing 2-0 two innings later as Cade Easterbrook headlined the scoring with a solo home run in the sixth.

Mississippi College's offense came alive late, clawing back from the narrow deficit. In the eighth, JT Vance stole third and scored on a throwing error, giving the Choctaws' their first run of the contest. An inning later, Korey Cooper delivered a clutch RBI single up the middle to plate Cade Gadman and even the score at 2-2.

Cooper and Vance finished the night with multiple-hit efforts. Cooper led the way going 4-for-6 with the RBI while Vance was 2-for-4 along with a pair of walks. It marked the first four-hit effort of the season for the Dickinson, Texas, native and his team-leading 20th of the season, while Vance logged his 11th multi-knock performance.

After the Choctaws looked to add more in the ninth, but left the bases loaded, UWF attempted to walk off in the bottom of the 10th, loading the bases with out. However, Bryce LaRocca ended the frame hauling in a fly ball and then erasing the Argonauts baserunner, Ben Maskin, trying to score from third.

On the mound, Holland Townes turned in a strong start, going six innings and allowing just two runs while striking out three. Kyle Collet provided two scoreless innings of relief before Coby Gollott (3-3) took the tough-luck loss in the 11th despite a gritty 2.1-inning effort.

Mississippi College and West Florida conclude the series on Saturday, April 19 with a doubleheader. First pitch at 1 p.m.
