Choctaws Split Doubleheader at UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. --- The Mississippi College baseball team held off a late charge from the University of Alabama in Huntsville to claim a 6-5 victory in the opener of Friday's Gulf South Conference doubleheader, but were edged 3-2 in the second game at Charger Park.

In the first game, the Choctaws (25-16, 16-10 GSC) rode a four-run third inning to build an early cushion and leaned on timely pitching late to secure the win. Bryce Capobianco delivered a two-run single in the first inning to open the scoring, and Alex Johnson added a two-RBI base hit in the third to headline the scoring. Jordan Evans chipped in an RBI single that gave MC a 6-1 lead.

Holland Townes (3-5) picked up the victory on the bump, fanning eight in five innings. Following the Ridgeland, Miss., native's exit, Kyle Collet and Coby Gollott combined to throw 4.1 shutout innings, with Gollott earning his third save of the season.

The Blue and White tested the lead in fifth inning as Presley Walker hit a three-run home run, pulling within a run, but Collet and Gollott combined to strike out three and allow just two Chargers to reach base the remainder of the way.

Mississippi College finished with seven hits in the contest, including two from Bryce LaRocca, who also scored a run, and collected the team's only extra-base hit.

In Game 2, LaRocca again provided a spark with a solo home run in the third to tie the game at 2–2. The homer gives the Lake Charles, La., product his 12th of the season, which leads the team. The homer was one of five hits in the game the Choctaws as UAH starter Cory Hagood (4-2) went the distance.

Logan Shurden added an RBI single for the Choctaws in the second, and JT Vance scored one of the Blue and Gold's two runs. Gabe Garner (4-3) pitched six innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs while striking out five in the setback.

Mississippi College and UAH conclude its weekend series on Saturday, Apr. 12. First pitch is Noon.
