JACKSON, Tenn. ---Â Mississippi College capped off a dominant weekend with a 10-2 victory over Union University on Sunday, completing the three-game Gulf South Conference series sweep at Fesmire Field. The Choctaws improved to 15-8 overall and 5-4 in GSC play.
Mississippi College wasted no time taking control, plating three runs in the first inning. Blakely Gill scored on a wild pitch, followed by Sarah Lee getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push another run across. Caylee Comer capped the inning with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Shelby Samples for a 3-0 lead.
The Choctaws exploded for five more runs in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Madelyn England to left center. Lee added an RBI double, and Comer followed with an RBI double of her own to make it an 8-0 game.
Mississippi College tacked on a run in the third when Ashlyn Rodger's groundout drove in Gill. Union (2-15, 0-9 GSC) responded in the bottom half with a two-run single from Hailey Sipes to cut the deficit to 9-2.
Gaddy Utsey provided the final run for the Choctaws in the fifth, singling through the right side to drive in England. The game was called after five innings due to the run rule.
Brookelyn Cannon (2-2) earned the win in relief, pitching three innings while allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Camryn Bailey started the game, tossing two no-hit innings and striking out four.
Offensively, Gill went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while England finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. The Choctaws totaled 10 hits, while Union was held to six.
