CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Mississippi College softball continued its strong run in Gulf South Conference play, securing a doubleheader sweep over Lee University on Friday at Butler Field. The Choctaws powered their way to an 11-6 victory in Game 1 before closing out the series with a 5-3 win in Game 2.
Game 1: Mississippi College 11, Lee 6
A seven-run explosion in the sixth inning lifted MC (19-8, 9-4 GSC) to a comeback win over the Flames. Blakely Gill, Shelby Samples, and Madison Jenkins each recorded multi-hit games, with Jenkins driving in a key run while also picking up the win in the circle.
Lee (16-10, 4-8 GSC) took an early 3-0 lead after three innings, but the Choctaws chipped away with a run in the fifth before breaking it open in the sixth. Ashley Lightcap delivered a clutch RBI double, and Megan Matheis followed with a two-run single to cap the rally.
Jenkins (9-2) pitched six innings, allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out four. Camryn Bailey tossed a scoreless seventh to seal the win.
Game 2: Mississippi College 5, Lee 3
In the nightcap, the Choctaws struck early and never trailed, securing their 10th conference win of the season. Madelyn England and Megan Matheis each drove in a run, while Sarah Lee added two RBIs.
Gill and England set the tone at the top of the lineup, combining for four runs and four hits. Camryn Bailey (4-3) went the distance in the circle, limiting Lee to three runs on six hits with one strikeout.
With the doubleheader sweep, MC has now won five straight GSC games and improves to 20-8 overall. The Choctaws will look to keep their momentum rolling as they return to the diamond tomorrow morning at 11 a.m for game three.
