JACKSON, Tenn.— The Mississippi College softball team extended its winning streak to five games with a dominant doubleheader sweep over Union University on Saturday, March 1, at Fesmire Softball Field in Jackson. The Choctaws improved to 14-8 (4-4 GSC), while the Bulldogs fell to 2-14 (2-5 GSC) in conference play.
Game 1: Mississippi College 5, Union 2
Mississippi College struck early, scoring three runs in the second inning to take control. Blakely Gill provided the big hit with a two-run double, while Bella Myers and Morgan Lavergne helped set the table with key base hits.
Union answered with two runs in the third on RBI hits from Brooke Puckett and Courtney Marler, but Jenkins (6-2) remained composed, finishing with a complete-game win, allowing just five hits while striking out eight. The Choctaws added insurance in the fifth, as Madison Jenkins singled home a run and Sarah Lee brought in another with a sacrifice fly.
Gill finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Shelby Samples, Madelyn England, and Lavergne each tallied two hits.
Game 2: Mississippi College 8, Union 0 (5 Innings)
The Blue and Gold wasted no time in Game 2, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the second innning. England and Samples reached base early, setting up Jenkins, who helped herself at the plate with a two-run single. Lee and Caylee Comer followed with RBI hits to cap off the explosive inning.
Union responded with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Mississippi College quickly regained control. In the fourth inning, the Choctaws tacked on three more runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Gill, extending the lead to 8-2.
Mississippi College sealed the win in the fifth when Lavergne ripped an RBI single and Samples stole home to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule.
Jenkins (7-2) dominated once again in the circle, tossing five innings of two-run ball while striking out six. She also added three RBIs at the plate. Gill finished with a team-high four RBIs, while Lavergne, Lee, and Comer each contributed to the offensive explosion.
With the doubleheader sweep, Mississippi College improved to 14-8 (4-4, GSC ) and strengthened its position in conference play.
