Softball Uses Late Rally To Take Series At Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Mississippi College secured a crucial Gulf South Conference series victory on Saturday rallying in the seventh inning to defeat Montevallo 5-4 on the road at Orr Park. The Lady Choctaws took two out of three games in the weekend series, improving to 10-8 overall and 2-4 in GSC play.

Trailing 4-2 heading into the seventh, Mississippi College capitalized on clutch hitting to complete the comeback. Blakely Gill delivered a two-run double to tie the game, scoring Bella Myers and Morgan Lavergne. Moments later, Madelyn England's sacrifice fly brought home Ashley Lightcap for the go-ahead run.

Camryn Bailey (5-4) earned the win in relief, tossing two perfect innings with one strikeout. Madison Jenkins started the game for MC, surrendering four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings before AK Willingham provided 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Montevallo (8-7, 3-3 GSC) jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the second on an RBI double by Sarah Johnson before extending their advantage to 4-0 in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run from Brooklyn Benton.

Mississippi College responded in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 4-2. England doubled home Lavergne, and Shelby Samples followed with an infield single to plate Gill.

The Lady Choctaws outhit Montevallo 11-6, with Gill, England, Samples, and Jenkins each collecting two hits. T. Lloyd (3-3) took the loss for the Falcons, allowing five runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Mississippi College looks to carry momentum into their next matchup on Tuesday when they travel to face Arkansas-Monticello in non-conference action.
