Choctaws Drop Series Opener at No. 25 Montevallo

Townes strikes out GSC-leading 11 batters

MONTEVALLO, Ala. --- The Mississippi College baseball team fell, 7-1, in the series opener at No. 25 Montevallo on Friday, Feb. 21. MC moves to 6-5 on the season and 2-2 in Gulf South Conference action.

The Choctaws' offense was limited as they totaled seven hits in the contest – all singles - led by Bryce LaRocca with a pair of hits, including the lone scoring hit in the ninth inning, pushing Jordan Evans across the dish as he reached on a two-out, hit by pitch.

Holland Townes (0-3) took the setback on the mound despite 11 strikeouts in the start, which is tied for most in the conference this season. The Ridgeland, Miss., native is the first Choctaw to strike out 10-plus batters in game since Chris Crosby on Feb. 24, 2019. He allowed five runs on seven hits in six innings.

Michael Sutton and Jeff Liddell saw action with an inning each in relief.

The Falcons used the long ball as they totaled 11 hits, including four home runs. The Purple and Gold led off with a home run in the first inning, added another in the sixth and closed out with back-to-back home runs in the seventh – all solo homers.

Mississippi College and Montevallo renew the series on Saturday, Feb. 22 with a doubleheader at Kermit A. Johnson Field. First pitch is 12 p.m.
