Softball Sweeps Miles in Doubleheader on Tuesday

GARDENDALE, Ala. --- Mississippi College dominated both sides of the ball Tuesday, sweeping Miles College in a nonconference doubleheader at Burns Park. The Choctaws (8-7) secured a 5-0 shutout in game one behind a stellar pitching performance from Camryn Bailey before capping the day with an 8-1 victory in game two.

Game One: Mississippi College 5, Miles College 0

Bailey (4-3) was nearly untouchable in the circle, throwing five no-hit innings with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Brookelyn Cannon closed out the final two frames, allowing just one hit while striking out three to complete the combined shutout.

Offensively, Mississippi College took control early when Caylee Comer launched a two-run homer to left field in the first inning, scoring Shelby Samples. The Choctaws added to their lead in the third when Morgan Lavergne scored on a passed ball, followed by a Sarah Lee sacrifice fly that plated Bella Myers for a 4-0 advantage.

Lee tacked on an RBI single in the fifth to cap the scoring, while Myers led the offense, going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. MC finished with seven hits, while holding Miles (0-6) to just one.

Game Two: Mississippi College 8, Miles College 1

The Choctaws carried their momentum into the second game, using a four-run third inning and a three-run fourth to take control early. Mississippi College racked up 14 hits and played error-free defense.

Madison Jenkins (3-2) earned the win, throwing three scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two. A.K. Willingham handled the final four innings, striking out five and allowing one run on five hits.

MC broke through in the third, starting with a passed ball that allowed Ashley Lightcap to score. Lavergne followed with an RBI double, Myers added an RBI single, and Lee capped the inning with another RBI double to make it 4-0.

The Choctaws continued their offensive surge in the fourth, with Lavergne driving in two runs on a fielder's choice before Myers added another RBI single to push the lead to 7-0. Camryn Bailey's fielder's choice in the sixth brought home the final MC run.

Miles avoided the shutout in the bottom of the sixth when G. Hall drove in a run with an RBI single. Lightcap led the Choctaws at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Lavergne and Myers each drove in two runs.

D. Nesbitt (0-1) took the loss for Miles, allowing eight runs on 14 hits in a complete-game effort.
