Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Mississippi College secured a dominant 5-0 victory in Game One but fell in a hard-fought 8-7 battle in Game Two of Friday's doubleheader against Montevallo at Orr Park.

Madison Jenkins was stellar in the circle, throwing a complete-game shutout while allowing just two hits and striking out seven. The Choctaws (9-7) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with an RBI double from Madelyn England, followed by a sacrifice fly from Bella Myers to make it 2-0. MC extended the lead in the sixth with RBI hits from Jenkins and Shelby Samples, while Caylee Comer capped the scoring with a sacrifice groundout in the seventh.

Samples led MC at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Sarah Lee was a perfect 4-for-4. The Choctaws out-hit Montevallo (7-6) 13-2 in the shutout win.

The second game of the doubleheader saw a back-and-forth battle, with Montevallo edging MC 8-7 in a seven-inning contest.

Mississippi College (9-8) took a 2-2 tie into the fourth before a five-run inning gave them a 7-4 lead. Blakely Gill's two-run double and Shelby Samples' RBI single highlighted the offensive surge. Sarah Lee added a two-run double to right field to cap the scoring in the frame.

Montevallo (8-6) responded with four unanswered runs, including a solo home run by Rylee Tyree in the fifth and a pair of unearned runs in the sixth, taking an 8-7 lead they would not relinquish. MC's Camryn Bailey (4-4) took the loss despite striking out nine in six innings, while Montevallo's Tori Lloyd (4-2) earned the win with a scoreless seventh inning.

MC finished with nine hits, led by Samples' two-hit performance. Ashley Lightcap added a two-run triple in the second inning.

The Choctaws will look to bounce back in the series finale against Montevallo on Saturday.
