JACKSON, Miss. — No. 15 Mississippi College softball came up short in a 6-3 loss to West Alabama on Sunday at Belhaven University's McLeod Field. The Choctaws dropped to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in Gulf South Conference play.
West Alabama jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on a pair of home runs, including a grand slam by Taylor Hatcher. The Choctaws responded in the sixth, scoring three runs to cut into the deficit. Blakely Gill started the rally with an RBI sacrifice fly, bringing in Caylee Comer. Moments later, Ashley Lightcap delivered a clutch two-run double to score Madelyn England and Comer, but MC was unable to complete the comeback.
Lightcap led MC at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while England and Comer each recorded a hit and a run scored. Brookelyn Cannon (1-2) took the loss in the circle, allowing five earned runs in the first inning. Madison Jenkins was strong in relief, tossing 6.2 innings while giving up just one run on two hits with eight strikeouts.
The Choctaws look to bounce back this week as they continue GSC play.
