CLINTON, Miss --- Mississippi College softball opened Gulf South Conference play on Friday, falling in both games of a doubleheader against a veteran West Alabama squad at the MC Softball Complex. The Tigers, returning several key players from last season, edged out the youthful Choctaws with late-inning rallies in both contests.
Game 1: West Alabama 2, Mississippi College 1
A pitchers duel unfolded in the series opener as West Alabama (9-4, 2-0 GSC) secured a 2-1 victory over Mississippi College (6-6, 0-2 GSC) with a two-run sixth inning.
MC struck first in the bottom of the second when Bella Myers RBI single to right field brought home Madison Jenkins for the early 1-0 lead. Jenkins also starred in the circle, holding the Tigers scoreless through five innings.
However, West Alabama capitalized in the sixth. Taylor Clegg delivered an RBI double to center, scoring Marissa Mitchell to tie the game. Moments later, E. Watson lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Clegg for the go-ahead run.
Despite putting six hits on the board, MC struggled to manufacture additional runs against West Alabama's Madison Wright (4-2), who struck out seven in a complete-game effort. Jenkins (2-2) took the tough-luck loss, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out eight.
Game 2: West Alabama 4, Mississippi College 1
The Tigers used another late-game push in the nightcap to claim a 4-1 win and clinch the series.
Scoreless through three innings, West Alabama broke through in the fourth when Clegg homered to center field, driving in Marissa Mitchell for a 2-0 lead.
Mississippi College trimmed the deficit in the sixth after Megan Matheis reached on an error at first base, allowing Sarah Lee to score an unearned run, making it 2-1.
West Alabama answered in the seventh, tacking on two insurance runs. R. Sullivan's RBI single and a Mitchell triple extended the lead to 4-1, putting the game out of reach.
MC managed just two hits against West Alabama's E. Block (5-1), who tossed a complete-game gem, striking out four while surrendering only one unearned run. Camryn Bailey (3-3) took the loss for the Choctaws despite a strong seven-inning performance, allowing six hits and four runs while fanning seven.
