Choctaws Fall to UAH in GSC Action

Strong, second-half surge leads Chargers

CLINTON, Miss. --- The MC women's basketball team fell to UAH, 89-66, at A.E. Wood Coliseum on Thursday, Dec. 18. The Choctaws move to 3-7 on the season and 2-3 in Gulf South Conference action.

Nia Coleman led the game with 17 points, converting 6 of 11 field goals and 3 of 6 from beyond the arc, as the Choctaws knocked down 10 in the decision. Keller Bigham chipped in with 10 points and collected six rebounds, including two 3-pointers. Karly Ivy added eight points while distributing three assists and grabbing two defensive rebounds.

MC started strong in the first quarter, establishing their offense with efficient shooting. They connected on 9 of 11 field goal attempts, including three successful 3-pointers. A key moment came when Bigham hit a 3-pointer at 7:29, assisted by Valencia McFall, pushing MC ahead. Despite turnovers, they maintained momentum with contributions from Vivian Sketoe and Mariam Olawoyin, the latter drilling a 3-pointer at 2:21. The Blue and Gold closed the quarter leading 22-19.

The Choctaws began the second quarter with a series of turnovers but gained momentum with Ivy's jumper at 8:13. Abigail Winslow's fastbreak layup at 7:28 extended their lead to 28–23. Despite this push, UAH responded with improved shooting, including a series of 3-pointers that shifted the momentum. MC struggled with turnovers and missed opportunities late in the quarter, allowing UAH to take advantage and outscore them 24–14, taking a 43–36 lead in at the intermission.

MC's efforts in the third quarter were highlighted by Coleman's performance, who contributed significantly with a jumper in the paint at 9:47 and a crucial 3-pointer at 2:05, assisted by Ivy. Despite these efforts, UAH maintained a strong offensive presence, with Paris Opelt making a notable 3-pointer at 6:51 and 0:30, keeping MC at bay, a leading 71-55 heading into the fourth.

The Blue and Gold opened the quarter with a layup by Coleman at 9:30, but struggled to maintain momentum as turnovers and fouls limited their offensive opportunities. A bright spot came when Olawoyin's steal led to a 3-pointer by Coleman at 7:25, narrowing the gap. Despite the effort, UAH maintained control through efficient shooting and defensive rebounding. MC managed to add points with contributions from Olawoyin and Coleman, but ultimately, UAH's scoring run in the latter half of the quarter extended their lead.

Ava McSwain led the scoring with 18 points, connecting on 8 of 14 field goal attempts. Paris Opelt followed with 17 points, hitting 4 of 5 from beyond the arc and adding two steals. Mia Hollingsworth contributed 15 points, all from three-point range, converting 5 of 13 attempts. Bella White added 14 points, excelling at the free-throw line by making 6 of 8 attempts, while also dishing out four assists.
