Travis Era Opens with Victory

MOBILE, Ala. --- Mississippi College edged Clark Atlanta, 74-72, with a decisive 24-point fourth quarter and 10 steals propelling them to victory at the Arthur R. Outlaw Recreation Center.

It marks the first collegiate, head-coaching victory for Rachel Travis.

Valencia McFall scored 19 points, going 7-of-9, including 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Karly Ivy also contributed 19 points and added six rebounds. Nia Coleman matched the scoring lead with 19 points on 8-of 11-shooting, while recording four assists and two steals. Gabby Collier added to the defensive effort with two steals and contributed six points.

MC opened the game with an early 3-pointer by McFall at 8:37, assisted by Coleman, setting the pace for a competitive first quarter. Ivy contributed significantly with multiple key jumpers, helping the Blue and Gold maintain a slim lead. However, the quarter concluded with Clark Atlanta capitalizing on free throws and edging ahead. At the end of the first quarter, the Choctaws trailed 20–18.

The Choctaws regained momentum with a critical series of plays in the second quarter, highlighted by a go-ahead three-pointer from McFall at 2:00 to lead 32–30. Ivy contributed significantly by sinking three consecutive free throws at 4:29 to tie and then take a narrow lead. Despite Clark Atlanta's efforts to respond, Mariam Olawoyin's layup in the final seconds secured a 34–34 tie at halftime.

The Blue and Gold surged early in the third quarter with a series of strategic plays, including a jumper by Ivy at 8:44, followed by a layup from McFall at 8:17, putting them ahead 38-34. Coleman added to this momentum with a layup at 7:40, extending their lead to six points. Despite MC's efforts and maintaining a lead through much of the quarter, Clark Atlanta mounted a comeback to level the score at 42 with a free throw by Atreonia Garner at 4:03. The Choctaws trailed 54-50 at the end of the third quarter.

MC seized control in the fourth quarter with a critical 3-pointer by McFall at 7:01, narrowing the gap to one point. A strong offensive stretch followed, highlighted by McFall's second 3-pointer at 5:39, which gave the Blue and Gold a four-point advantage. Clark Atlanta briefly tied the game at 67 with a successful free throw by Garner at 2:26, but MC responded with two free throws from Coleman at 2:06 to regain the lead.

In a tense final minute, Coleman delivered a crucial defensive rebound and, following a timeout, scored a go-ahead layup with one second remaining.

MC takes on Spring Hill on Saturday, Nov. 15. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
