CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi College men's soccer kicked off the 2024 season with a 2-0 victory over Texas A&M International on Thursday in wet conditions at Robert P. Longabaugh Field. Goals from Jayce Dotson and Lewis Matton propelled the Choctaws to a strong start.
Dotson opened the scoring in the 18th minute, converting a chance to give Mississippi College (1-0) an early lead. The Choctaws doubled their advantage just before halftime when Matton found the back of the net in the 44th minute, securing a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Despite the rain, the Choctaws managed to control the pace of play, recording 13 shots with nine on target. Texas A&M International (0-1) registered 12 shots but only three were on goal, all of which were saved by Mississippi College goalkeeper Cole Turner, who earned the clean sheet with a solid 90-minute performance.
Texas A&M International held the edge in corner kicks with five compared to two for the Choctaws, while fouls were fairly even, with MC committing seven and TAMIU 10.
Matton led the team with three shots, while Dotson and Denis O. John added two shots on goal each. TAMIU's goalkeeper was forced to make seven saves to keep the game close, but MC's defense stood firm throughout.
Mississippi College looks to build on the win as they continue their season opening home slate on Saturday versus St. Edwards beginning at 12 p.m. in Clinton, Miss.
