CLINTON, Miss. – Mississippi College men's soccer kept their momentum rolling with a 5-2 victory over St. Edward's on Saturday afternoon at Arrow Field. The win moves the Choctaws to 2-0 on the season.
Lewis Matton had a standout performance, scoring the first of his four goals just over 16 minutes into the match, with an assist from Jayce Dotson. Matton's tally was his fifth of the season in just two games. Dotson also set up Matton's second goal just two minutes later, giving MC a commanding 3-0 lead.
Sergio Garrido added another goal for the Choctaws in the 27th minute before Matton completed his hat trick in the 30th minute. Matton's dominance on the day saw him finish with four goals, taking five shots, all on target.
St. Edward's tried to respond, with Christian Mezas finding the net in the 32nd minute to cut the deficit to 5-1 at halftime. Masood Porsa added another goal late in the second half for St. Edward's, but the Choctaws' early lead proved insurmountable.
Mississippi College edged St. Edward's in total shots, 14-13, with both teams posting 10 shots on goal. MC goalkeeper Carlos Viquez was a solid presence in goal, making six saves to secure the win.
The Choctaws will look to continue their winning streak on Tuesday when they hit the road to take on Harding in Searcy, Ark. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
