MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The 2024 Gulf South Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships began Thursday with six GSC records being broken at the Montevallo Track & Field Stadium. Lee leads the women's side in total points, while Mississippi College lead the men.
Montevallo's Walter Womack set the tone, breaking the decathlon's 100-meter record in 10.81. Lee's Sydney White followed suit, establishing a new conference mark in the heptathlon 200-meter race with 25.77. Liezl Theron of the Lady Flames won the heptathlon high jump after clearing 1.65m, securing another record. West Georgia's Melita-Marie Roachford threw 55.09m in the women's hammer throw, claiming a meet record. West Alabama's Balikis Yakubu set a new conference record in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 23.63 in the prelims. Lee's Mckenna Cavanaugh joined the fray, finishing the 3000-meter steeplechase in 10:23.05.Â
Lee's Theron leads the heptathlon with 2,962 points, while Flames' Cameron Stine leads the decathlon field with 3,426 points. Alabama Huntsville's Nathan Knox claimed first place in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:00.22, while teammate Sam Wilhelm won the men's 10,000-meter race after crossing the finish line in 30:51.14. Lee's Danielle Horter capped off the night by winning the women's 10,000-meter with a time of 36:34.10.
