Choctaws Stumble at Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. --- The Mississippi College women's basketball team stumbled at Lee University as it dropped a 59-40 decision inside Paul Dana Walker Arena on Thursday, Feb. 15. MC moves to 10-13 on the season and 9-11 in Gulf South Conference action. The Flames improved to 16-8 and 14-6 in the league.

Kyiah Julian paced the Choctaws as she led the team with 11 points and was one of three players on the team with a team-best four rebounds. It marks the ninth time this season the Greenwood, Ark., native scored in double figures and the 40th of her career

Karly Ivy joined Julian with double digits in the scoring column as she totaled 10 points. The Denton, Texas, native has scored in double figures a team-best 13 times this season and 18 during her two-year stint in Clinton.

Sky Vaughn and Nia Coleman joined Julian as leaders on the glass.

MC shot 36 percent from the field, including a 40 clip from behind the arc. The Choctaws were limited at the free-throw line to just five attempts, but converted on four. Lee shot 42 percent from the floor, but were held to just 6-of-24 from the 3-point line. However, the Flames were 9-for-11 from the charity stripe.

Mallory Hampton led the Red and White with 18 points while Addison Smith pulled down 11 rebounds.

Lee held a 35-14 lead at the intermission as it closed the second quarter on a 17-2 run. The Choctaws seven points in each of the first two periods. The 14 points are the lowest opening-half total since 13 points at Valdosta State on Jan. 19, 2023.

MC looked to methodically work its way back into the contest as it strung together a 6-0 run over a nearly two-minute span near the end of the third quarter, but the Flames drew within a point of matching the Blue and Gold's total in the quarter at 15-14. LU never looked back the remainder of the contest as it derailed the regular-season sweep attempt from its visitors from the Magnolia State.

Mississippi College continues its quest for a GSC Tournament berth as it returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 17 as it travels to Rome, Ga., to face Shorter University. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. central.
